Airlines send 'shutdown' SOS: Will flights be affected?
Major airlines such as Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet say they may struggle to continue operations due to high fuel costs.
The airlines have asked the government to revise the price of aviation fuel as it now makes up ~40% of operating costs, driven by rising oil prices.
What airlines told govt: "In order to survive, sustain and continue operation, we request your urgent intervention," as reported by NDTV.
What's in it for you?
- •TRAVEL DISRUPTION The airlines have warned about grounding of staff or flight cancellations. Fewer flights or route cuts could reduce availability.
- •FLIGHT PRICES MAY INCREASE: Airfares may rise sharply, making travel more expensive. Flight tickets have already been getting pricier since the beginning of the war.
- •DON'T PANIC While this is a warning from the industry, the government is still in discussions with the airlines and no official announcements of halting of operations or increase in fares have been made.
